SELLING OUR NATIONS FUTURE BIT BY BIT “STOP
THE SALE OF AUSTRALIA”By Mark Aldridge
the media remain silent over the latest big “local farmland” buy-up, not only
all over the nation but here in SA, ignoring what it could mean for local food
production, it’s worth looking to see where these foreign buyers are coming
from. Who’s backing them and how other countries are finding the balls to
legislate to stop them.
have called for a moratorium on all property sales to non Australian citizens
until this important issue can be debated in the public arena, and a referendum
can be held to ensure the peoples position.
the freeze on land sales, foreign investment will have to be in either
partnership with an Australian national, or by way of investment in Australian
businesses. Prime farm and residential
land must remain only available to Australian citizens.
New regulations were recently introduced in New Zealand in
January this year to help restrict who can
buy agricultural land, after local farmers there were repeatedly
courted by foreign-controlled interests. New Zealand labelled their
land as Sensitive areas.
here in Australia must call such land “invisible” as they don’t even take note
of any sales unless they exceed 244 million or over 1000 million?
To try and avoid companies acquiring land in dribs and
drabs, New Zealand’s new tests say purchases will still need to be tested if
they are bought in one transaction or in multiple purchases over
time. China from my investigations split up multi title properties to avoid
even local scrutiny.
than the token “Cubby Station sale media coverage” we would not even know our nation
was for sale. I make the point very
clear that the government not only do not care, they do not even keep an eye on
who is buying our nation, let alone how much.
Latin America, another target for foreign raiders looking
to buy up big blocks of farmland, has also looked to tighten ownership
, the current government is also looking
to restrict transfer of land to foreign ownership, after it failed to pass
under the previous administration.
Canada, where provinces are in charge of regulating how much farmland
foreigners can buy and regulatory frameworks vary, the National Farmers
Federation says the country is losing its grip on prime
Earlier this year I released
articles addressing many concerns with foreign buy up of prime land. In the NT
figures of over 30% already sold is not a clear picture of the truth, when our useless
government lump prime growing land and grazing land in the same basket, where
the buy up of prime production land, could be more like 80% already.
big players would be well aware of the UN reports which predict a huge surge in
the value of food crops, especially grains. So where our government should be protecting
our food security and export potential, they are turning a blind eye. A very short sighted view indeed.
all know food isn’t the only target of the buy-up: foreign-owned companies
are also grabbing hold of local energy resources, even those that sit
on prime farmland.
The big back room deal at the moment is to ensure on paper every
sale is below $244 million. The whole country is being sold in small parcels. Add to that the decision of the government to
make foreign investment in residential even easier a couple of years ago, it is
credible to assume we have already lost over 50% of our nations “Vital land
holdings” as I prefer to call them.
quizzed on ABC Radio about the Shenhua buy-up, Prime Minister Julia Gillard
tasked Assistant Treasurer Bill Shorten with assessing the “total picture” of
land ownership across the country. Yet we will see no reports until
after 2017, and they will be census based. Not by much needed scrutiny of lands title
It will be difficult to retrieve prime agricultural
land when it’s gone, so we must slow or stop the sales now, and address the
ideal of buying back our nations food bowl as a primary goal.
This whole issue escalates when we throw mining into the equation,
and the well known selling of our precious future recourses, which takes away
important job security.
Not only do we
sell the mines, we throw away value adding of a non renewable resource.
have written articles, held rallies, arranged petitions, and backed the hand
full of representatives that also believe in the need to secure our nation’s
ability to employ and feed itself, and we are losing the battle.
last week 24 September 2012, I returned from our Riverland here in
SA. After personally meeting many
farmers and producers who have had the Chinese on their door step, pursuing
prime land holdings and water entitlements, and who can blame them, they are ensuring
their countries food security.
Ask this question as loud as you can “who is
protecting our nation’s food security?”
phone our supposed representatives, speak to neighbours, your family and your
friends and prepare to step up for our children’s and our nation’s future. The
rallies are coming. Let’s hope they come before our country has been sold
are articles on my site relating to land sales.
Issues to address farmers and growers, the avenues I have taken to
address these urgent problems in the short term, like the “Farm Direct”
markets. Join in, support and help
educate. In a supposed democracy the people rule, best we stood up to the task.
